Question : What is VoIP
Answer : VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. As the term implies VoIP is the transmission of voice communication through IP packets and, therefore, through the Internet. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) enables you to receive phone calls thru the Internet instead of using the traditional analog PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) lines.

Question : How does VoIP work?
Answer : This is basically the way VoIP works, sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network PSTN). It is possible to send a voice signal to a remote destination digitally, as well as via analog. To do that, we have to digitize it with an ADC (analog to digital converter), transmit it, and at the end transform it again in analog format with DAC (digital to analog converter) to use it.

Question : What are the advantages of VoIP?
Answer : Apart from saving you money, the best reason for using VoIP is the host of new services that are available. These include:

  • Add multiple new inbound area codes for your phone, allowing you to create a ‘virtual presence’ in other cities, or provide a local calling number to family members.
  • Conference call with multiple people on the same call.
  • music-on-hold
  • Individual Call Filtering and Blocking. Solves the problem of Caller ID when the inbound call says ‘Unavailable’.
  • Call Hunting/Find me. This calls individual numbers that you specify (either one at a time in sequence, or all at the same time) to find you wherever you are.
  • Receive voicemail messages to your email inbox or web page
  • Geographic mobility. If you use an Internet Adapter you can take it on trips and use it wherever there is a high speed Internet connection.

Question: Can VoIP make and receive calls to/from PSTN lines?
Answer: Absolutely! VoIP users can definitely make and receive calls to/from PSTN lines. Any type of calls (e.g. local, long distance, international, etc.) are allowed. This requires an account with VoIP Service Providers that provide termination.

Question: What are VoIP Gateways?
Answer: VoIP gateways are devices that take analog voice signals and convert them to IP for transport over the LAN or WAN.

Question: What are VoIP Gateways?
Answer: VoIP Routers route VoIP traffic in much the same way that regular routers route IP (Internet Protocol) traffic.

Question: What are VoIP PBX’s?
Answer: VoIP PBX's are high-tech low-cost equivalents of traditional telephone PBX's. In addition to traditional PBX functionality, VoIP PBX's configure and manage VoIP network capabilities.
